Tom and I both went to school in Atchison, Kansas. His roommates were injured after a football game. I was doing a research project on students with challenges and needed subjects. I spent the next few months helping them get around campus, as well as interviewing them; and we all became friends. Tom made his first gesture to me by flying out from California to Arkansas to see me before we were even dating. My parents said they knew he was a “keeper.”
After college, Tom decided to move from California to Arkansas. He asked me what I wanted when we got in engaged, and I hinted that I wanted our families to be involved and wanted it to be somewhere that had meaning. Tom asked my dad for permission and my dad helped Tom find my engagement ring. Tom and I went to have dinner with my parents and then he brought me back to Bentonville square. Tom told me we were going to go for a walk and I remember complaining about how cold it was! One of the first places I took Tom when he visited Arkansas was Crystal Bridges, so it was fitting that he took me to the lit-up Bridges and had a beautiful proposal waiting for me. For the wedding at the beautiful Horton Farms, we went for a southern vintage theme. My mom and I went to antique stores finding décor’ and fabric, we designed and decorated our centerpieces and my father painted signs. I am a first grade teacher, and we planned to have a lot of kids there so we had activities like pumpkin decorating, coloring, glow sticks, ping pong, photo booth with props, bubbles and a “kid’s menu.”
Highlights of the day…My first and second grade class sang at my wedding. I celebrated with them with cake before we went to the reception. My dad and his brothers performed a “thriller” dance and last, we helped one of our friends get ENGAGED AT OUR WEDDING! It was truly a party!
